Score You Need on the Final

How This Is Calculated

FormulaDesired Grade = (Current Average × Remaining Weight) + (Final Score × Final Weight)

Solving for the final score you need:

RearrangedFinal Score = [Desired Grade − (Current Average × Remaining Weight)] ÷ Final Weight
Worked Example Current average: 84% · Final exam weight: 40% · Target: 90% overall

90 = (84 × 0.60) + (Final Score × 0.40)
90 = 50.4 + (Final Score × 0.40)
39.6 = Final Score × 0.40
Final Score = 99%

That's a demanding target — exactly the kind of thing worth knowing three weeks out rather than the night before. If the number comes back above 100%, your target isn't reachable even with a perfect score given how much the final counts; if it comes back negative, you've already secured that grade regardless of the final.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate what I need on my final exam?

Take your current average, multiply it by the weight of everything except the final (1 minus the final's weight), subtract that from your target grade, then divide by the final's weight. This calculator does that math for you instantly.

What if the score I need is over 100%?

That means your target grade is not reachable even with a perfect score on the final, given how much weight it carries. You would need a higher score on earlier assignments to make that target possible, or need to adjust your target grade.

What if the score I need is negative or very low?

That means you have already secured your target grade based on your current average alone, regardless of what you score on the final exam.

Where do I find my final exam's weight?

Check your course syllabus. Instructors typically list the exact percentage each grading category (homework, quizzes, midterm, final) contributes to your overall grade.

Does this work for any weighting, not just finals?

Yes. The same formula works for any single remaining assignment or exam that has a known weight, as long as you know your current average and the target grade you want.
