Weighted GPA Calculator
A weighted GPA gives extra points for harder courses — Honors, AP, and IB classes count for more than the same letter grade in a regular class. Add your courses below, mark which ones are Honors or AP/IB, and see your weighted GPA alongside your unweighted GPA for comparison.

Weighted GPA Calculator
Add each course with its grade, credits, and course type. Weighted and unweighted GPA update as you type.
Uses a common weighting convention: +0.5 for Honors, +1.0 for AP/IB. Your school may weight differently or cap the maximum weighted GPA — check your school’s specific policy.
How Weighted GPA Is Calculated
The course bonus depends on the class level. Using a common convention — no bonus for Regular, +0.5 for Honors, +1.0 for AP/IB — an A is worth 4.0 in a regular class, 4.5 in an Honors class, and 5.0 in an AP or IB class.
| Course | Type | Credits | Grade | Unweighted Points | Weighted Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| English 11 | Regular | 1 | A | 4.0 | 4.0 |
| AP Chemistry | AP/IB | 1 | B+ | 3.3 | 4.3 |
| Honors Algebra II | Honors | 1 | A- | 3.7 | 4.2 |
| World History | Regular | 1 | B | 3.0 | 3.0 |
Unweighted GPA here: (4.0+3.3+3.7+3.0) ÷ 4 = 3.50. Weighted GPA: (4.0+4.3+4.2+3.0) ÷ 4 = 3.88. The AP and Honors courses pull the weighted number noticeably higher, even though the letter grades didn't change.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a weighted GPA?
A weighted GPA gives extra grade points for harder courses like Honors, AP, or IB classes, so an A in an AP class counts for more than an A in a regular class. This is why weighted GPA can exceed 4.0.
How much extra credit do AP and Honors classes get?
A common convention adds 1.0 point for AP or IB courses and 0.5 for Honors courses, though the exact bump varies by school district. Always check your own school's specific weighting policy.
Can a weighted GPA go above 4.0?
Yes. Because AP, IB, and Honors courses add extra points, a strong course load in those classes can push weighted GPA above 4.0, even though unweighted GPA for the same transcript stays at or below 4.0.
Do colleges look at weighted or unweighted GPA?
Most colleges see both numbers, along with your school's profile explaining how it weights courses, so admissions officers can compare you fairly against your own school's grading conventions rather than relying on either number alone.
Is a 4.5 weighted GPA good?
Yes, a 4.5 weighted GPA is generally strong, typically reflecting mostly A grades with a meaningful number of Honors or AP courses. How competitive it is depends on your school's specific weighting scale, since schools weight differently.
